Lunchtime Fun & Rituals with Kids

This is a sponsored post from BlogHer and Smuckers.

This giveaway is now closed.

Camping trips, lazy days at the pool, backyard water fights, and picnics at the park - these are the activities that a good summertime story is made of. As much as my kids enjoy the carefree days of summer (they even managed to lose track of the days within the first two weeks), they are also excited to start back to school. While I relish the thought of having some time to myself again, I already feel nostalgic about the memories we create together in the summer.

Lunchtime during the summer holidays takes place according to our bodies' schedules rather than the clock's. Two little heads appear beside me as I start pulling lunch meat and slices of watermelon out of the fridge. Four willing hands start to spread mayonnaise and mustard on slices of bread and set the patio table with place mats and napkins. My 6-year old son has claimed the job of "Official Cucumber Slicer". He sits carefully on a chair, pulled up to the counter, and slowly saws away at a cucumber until we have enough slices to fill everyone's sandwiches.

With my husband and I both working from home on many days, we have ample opportunities to eat together. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I would not have it any other way. It gives us the opportunity to chat about our day so far and to enjoy each other's company. How I am going to miss our midday chats when summer is over. Lunchtime will be far too quiet.

With my boys gone all day at school in the fall, I have an overwhelming need to stay connected to them even while we are apart. When I make their lunch each morning (they will be eating corn dogs and waffles on a stick - seriously - over my dead body), I tuck a note in each of their lunches. While the notes always include some sort of motherly sentiment, I also include either a fill-in-the-blanks secret message or a joke they can share with their friends. This small gesture lets them know that I am thinking of them, even though we are not together. After school, they often can not wait to tell me that they solved the puzzle or which of their friends had a joke to tell in response.

There are only a few weeks of summer holidays left and I plan to enjoy every moment we spend preparing and eating lunch together. For more great ideas on fun ways to spend time with your kids, check out Smucker's Kidvitations.

We walked home from school for lunch. When we were finished eating, we watched a local kid's tv show before we went back to school. It was a very nice break.

My mom always wrote me a note on my napkin when I was in school and I carried on that tradition with my own children. It's funny but my sons are much older than my daughter and sometimes they make her lunch and tuck the note on a napkin into her lunch too. She loves getting a message from her big brothers on her napkin.

I don't really remember a favorite lunch time ritual. I went to a one-room school with all 8 grades. My siblings & I brought sack lunches--as did everyone else. I remember being envious of the kids who had store-bought treats. As an adult, I don't even like those very same treats!

Now, I never ask for them. Too much balogna.
Good thing to mix up lunch items. Now I understand, better.

Weekday lunches were best enjoyed with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches - and if I had plain potato chips, I would put them in my sandwich. Salty crunchy deliciousness. On weekends, I looked forward to hot dog sandwiches. We didn't have much money growing up, and my mom wasn't much of a cook, but after a morning spent running errands, we'd come back and my mom would slice hot dogs lengthwise and fry, top with a slice of cheese, and slather mustard on two slices of bread. Add hot dogs and cheese - and there you have it. Hot dog sandwich. Not high on my desired list now, but it's a fun memory.

I loved when sandwiches were in shapes when I was a kid. When I was home, my Mom would use cookie cutters to make heart, star and circular sandwiches....even shaped grilled cheese sandwiches.

When I was a kid peanut better and Jelly was a very popular school lunch. My grandmother always cut the sandwiches into 4's (in half and then half again). The kids at my lunch table thought that I had a better sandwich because it was cut differently. When my grandmother found out that I was sharing it, she sent more for my friends.

I always loved the anticipation of what was in the lunch bag as well as what could I trade it for. Sadly my parents were "healthy" and I usually had nothing to trade for! Nobody wanted my food! lol And when I did have something yummy I wanted it for myself so even though I thought about it just about every day it only happened a small amount of the time. :)

Here's my childhood lunch ritual!
In high school, my parents gave me lunch money to eat in the school cafeteria. A cheap and filling lunch for me was vegetable soup and a freshly-made yeast roll - and I was able to keep what was left over from my lunch money to spend on other things. I was thrifty even then!

When I was in grade school, my dad used to pick up little candies to put in my lunch. Like a plastic garbage can with "garbage" candy inside, or a lunchbox with "food", etc. The best part was he always included a goofy rhyming poem to go with the candy.

During the summer, my lunch time was making it with my mom. Just the process of deciding what to eat, making and sitting down to read the newspaper made me feel all grown up. During school time, I would have to get in line with my friends as we had to be assigned seating based on how you was in line as tables was filled one by one. We would exchange our home lunches if we brought them or traded (hated raisen cookies) foot if school lunch. A major silly tradition.

When I was growing up we lived on a really long side road with lots and lots of kids our age.
So we were always all over the neighborhood playing ball, skateboarding and riding bikes.
As long as my mom knew where we would be we were free to stay and play except for lunch and dinner time.
Those two times a day we were required to be at home to sit down with our family and have a meal.
And we always enjoyed it. It gave us time to catch up on what we had been doing, were going to be doing and laugh at each others silly jokes and antics.
During those two meals a day it was as if time stood still.
And it definitely made for one of my favorite childhood memories.

I still think of it and laugh today. Every day at lunch my mom would yell out of the front door that it was lunch time, and I would hear it wherever I was in the neighborhood and rush home to eat. Hilarious!

I used to eat my banana and put the sticker inside my lunchbox. I even got my teachers to provide some banana stickers for me. I had one teacher give me a price sticker off of her can of Tab.

Maybe my childhood is just too far away, but I don't remember anything special about lunches. Not at home, not at Mam-ma's house. The only snippet of memory I have is when I was in elementary school, they used to serve a celery stalk with peanut butter in it, and I'd lick the peanut butter out and leave the celery.

My mom always had me take the cafeteria hot lunch, so I never had any real lunch time rituals ... unless you count trading desserts with the other kids lol

favorite lunch time was tuna fish... I'd get mine before my sister, because I didn't like pickle relish and she did. Just always has reminded me of the little things my mom did to keep the peace....

I have to say that I don't remember lunch times as a kid. My parents weren't the type to really do anything special for us. I like to send notes to school with my girls whenever they take packed lunches to school. Thank you!!

My weird lunchtime ritual was bringing soup in a thermos for lunch! I didn't like sandwiches so I brought that instead, weird!

Lunch for us was at noon everyday, no matter where we were, outside playing or at a friends house, we were expected to be home by noon to sit down with our Mom and have lunch and again at six for dinner. Mom believed families should eat together

When I was a kid, my sister and I had my mom play the role of the "lunch lady" from school and make us lunch on actual cafeteria trays - and often she'd make the same types of meals we'd get at lunch (though a lot better tasting!). I guess we loved school so much we wanted to recreate it in the summer and on weekends!

In the summers I would stay with my grandma while my mom took college classes. She fed me ham and cheese sandwiches,an apple and three oreos every day all summer. I used to take apart the oreos and eat them separately and it drove her nuts so I started doing that to my sandwich too just to be a brat.

When I was a kid, my mom would do fun little rituals at lunchtime. She would cut our sandwiches into shapes with cookie cutters. She would also do theme lunches, like picnics in the living room or "campfire cooking" where we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows over the fir in the fireplace.

When I was younger I wouldn't eat anything that my fingers would touch. So whatever I ate had to be eaten with a fork. If for some reason it couldn't be eaten with a fork, I would eat around the part that I had touched.
