Breakfast in a Hurry & A Giveaway

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

Try as I might to get everything organized on a school night, some unexpected incident often throws a wrench in the plan - a glass of juice spills down the front of one kid's shirt, the other kid steps in dog poop in the backyard, or the treasured soccer ball that is to be taken to school needs to be pumped up. It is mornings such as these when any pre-conceived notions of "fancy" breakfasts fly out the window.

I am happy to report that we never steer towards the fast food restaurants. This makes me feel slightly better about being that mum dropping her kids off at school while wearing stained sweats, a baseball cap pulled over my matted hair, and teeth less than pristinely brushed. I am surprised that my kids do not ask to be dropped off a block away from school so that they can deny all knowledge of my existence.

Despite the manic pace and my disheveled appearance on these mornings, my husband and I are able pull ourselves together long enough to grab a box of healthy cereal, pour it into bowls with some fruit thrown on top, and place these a healthy breakfast in front of our eldest son (and us). Raisin Bran, Smart Start, and Rice Krispies are typically the cereals of choice, but occasionally some form of toasted Os makes an appearance. As I mentioned previously, my typically adventurous younger son can barely deign to sit at the same table where cereal is being eaten, so he eats a whole-wheat bagel with cream cheese or peanut butter, and plenty of fruit.

The whole morning scene is not pretty, but we get the job done and everyone is fed a morning meal that will keep them energized for several hours.

Many times I have hardboiled eggs in the frig just for times like this. But a lot of times it is a piece of toast with peanut butter and some string cheese.

Alot of times, my kids eat "cereal in a cup" so it is still good for them, but they eat in the car on the way to school. Terrible, I know :)

We put out cereal, Pop Tarts, granola bars and fruit the night before school days. OR the kids might have a waffle with peanut butter spread on it. For ME, I like rice cakes (cinny is my fave) with peanut butter and sliced bananas...apples work too!
I DO make my 3 kids all slam a glass of milk too, for added protein and calcium. (They NEVER drink the milk from the cereal bowl so I started telling them not to bother and eat it dry with a glass of milk. I hate the gifts of cereal bowl milk for me to clean up.!)

thanks so much!

There are some mornings when even cereal takes too much time for us. I feel like the world's worst mommy on those mornings and make my daughter take a cereal bar or donut so I know she at least ate SOMETHING. Heck, even a cookie reduces my mom-guilt. Cold Pop Tarts work too.
