Tackling the Fitness Giant

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Reebok.

Reebok1

There is something a little different about my New Year's resolutions this year. Six days after all of the New Year's revelers have stumbled over the words of Auld Lang Syne and the calendar has flipped to 2011, I will be reaching a milestone of my own. The big 4-0! In past years, my resolutions involved exercising more and eating healthfully for the purpose of fitting into my old jeans or being beach-ready by the time summer rolled around. While those end goals are still at the back of my mind, my objectives are now coming from a different perspective.

Over the years, adjusting from the single life to the satisfying life of being a wife, mother to young boys, and a professional, I had several epiphanies. First, it is necessary to stay in shape simply for the purpose of keeping up with two boys. There is not a lot of sitting down and playing quietly in our house. On any single day, we may wrestle in the family room, shoot hoops in the driveway, practice game-winning touchdown throws, and pull a wagon around the neighborhood to collect glass bottles from 20 to 25 homes. Sitting still is not an option.

Reebok2

Second, I know that I want to be around for many years to come. My boys will be hitting milestones of their own, my husband and I have places in the world we want to explore and, someday, there will be grandchildren and even great-grandchildren to enjoy. I don't want to miss a moment of that. While exercise and healthful eating does not guarantee that I will live a long and healthy life, research shows that engaging in these habits can help ward off certain diseases and live with general good health.

Lastly, the frequency I exercise and the way I eat effects how I feel, the amount of patience I have, and how mentally sharp I am during the day. Believe me, there have been many times that I have fallen off the exercise wagon. The effect on my mental focus and my self-confidence is profound. It is a struggle to start up again, but the rewards are instantaneous and always positive.

So, what are my New Year's resolutions? My running partner and I are going to work on increasing our mileage, with the goal of running a half-marathon in the spring. With my increasing age (ahem) and the issues of decreasing bone-density, it is time to get serious about strength training. As for eating - well, that's a tougher one. You see, I am a food blogger, which means that I cook ALOT. Of course, that also means that I have more control over how I eat. I resolve to work in more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains - in snacks, as well as at mealtime.

Spinach Salad with Fuyu Persimmons, Jicama & Avocado with Miso Dressing Recipe

Along with the a regular exercise program, I am interested in trying some of those cute, comfy-looking shoes, such as Reebok EasyTones, that promise toning benefits. Really, who doesn't want to tighten their thighs and butt while just doing daily errands and running after the kids? To learn more about Reebok EasyTones, visit the Official site.

Whether or not I fit into my skinny jeans by the end of 2011, I am looking forward to claiming that I embraced turning 40 and enjoyed becoming strong and healthy, both mentally and physically.

Thursday I'm having extensive back surgery. Though I don't usually make new-year resolutions, I've "resolved" to listen to and follow the directions of my physical therapist. My usual all-or-nothing approach won't work here. I need to build strength and stamina, and this time, I'm listening to the professionals.

Thanks for a great giveaway!

My mental goal for the year is to stop letting limitations LIMIT me completely and to stop saying "CAN'T"! I compare what I used to do to what I do now and just because my health/strength/energy doesnt allow me to do what I USED to, does not mean I should not try to do SOMETHING! I will try to do a quarter mile on the treadmill, walk to my neighbors down the street, do some floor work to get this sorry mess toned up and ALSO quit isolating MYSELF...quit whining and get OUT more!

thanks so much!

I turn 40 this summer as well, although when my brother in-law mentioned we should have a joint bash this summer since he turns the big 3-0 (whoopy)and I turn you-know-what, I reminded him I am turning 28 again... :-)
But seriously, I really want to feel physically fit this year. I feel I am at a comfortable weight, but would be happier knowing that my heart was as healthy as possible approaching the next half of my life!

I just had my son at the end of October so I plan on signing up for the gym this weekend. My goal is to go the gym at least 3 times a week and get this baby weight off! I'm also going to start a food journal and stick to 1400 calories a day! I think this will also help me feel better after gaining all the weight from the baby. Plus working out is a great stress reliever!

I've decided that for each year's resolution, I'm going to learn something new. I always felt weird that I didn't know how to swim so this year I signed up for swimming lessons at our local community college. Not only will I learn a new skill, I'm hoping to get healthier with some much-needed exercise.

November I had my 5th baby. After my first baby I was never able to get back to pre pregnancy weight. I came close, but every time I did, I would find out I was pregnant again. After my 4th (had gained over 50 lbs) I was never able to get even close to prepregnancy weight. This last pregnancy I only gained 28 lbs, and I have lost it all. Now I am working on achieving "healthy weight!" my ultament goal is to loose 20 lbs. It would put me back to the weight I was 4-6 years ago, and towards the top of my healthy weight. But I would be thrilled to be there again! I do not strive to be tiny, my hips won't allow that, at my skinniest and 16 I was a 7 and I was flat belly and in shape, but that's my hips right there. I think I was 13 when my hips kicked me out of a 5 and into a 7. And that's a number I am okay with not seeing again. I'm not asking for single digits, just HEALTHY!

I will run in the Undy 5000 - Dallas this year and help to raise awareness and money for a cure for colon cancer in my father's honor and memory. We were signed up to run last year but lost daddy to the disease just 16 hours before the race. I regret not running last year but am proud that we raised nearly $1000 for our team. Go Chisum Crew! And I will stop making excuses for everyone, including myself. It's time to put up or shut up. trinitygsd at yahoo dot com

I've been very lax about doing any king of exercise this last year partly because of injury but not entirely. I plan to start slowly but work up to a decent exercise routine.

My family has set up an "eat healthier" goal for this year and my kids have really gotten into it. They look for great recipe's online, give me a shopping list and we make our dinner together. So far, it's been alot of fun!

My big thing this year is social health. I have a tendency to be a real hermit and not get with my awesome friends nearly enough to the point of it being unhealthy. This year, and I have done well so far, I am promising to get with friends more often.

My focus this year is on organic living. I want to edit my budget and spending habits to allow me to have more money so that I can afford to do all my shopping at the local Whole Foods and make my meals as organic and natural as possible. This will enable me to eat healthy good foods that I enjoy while losing weight without even really trying just by cutting out all the eating out!
